An
American Red Cross lifeguard certification course for persons 15 years
of age and older is being offered February 12-14 at the North Myrtle
Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center. Preregistration is required prior to
February 10.
Applicants
must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using the front crawl,
breaststroke or a combination of the two. A timed qualification event
includes swimming 20 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a
combination of the two; surface diving to a depth of 7-10 feet;
retrieving a 10 pound object; returning to the surface; and swimming 20
yards on one’s back to the starting point with the 10 pound object.
Applicants must also be able to tread water for two minutes using their
legs only.
The course schedule is as follows:
- February 12, 6:30-8:30pm, course prerequisites as described above
- February 13-14, 8:00am-4:00pm, course work
To
successfully graduate from the course, participants must be on time and
attend all classes, pass all water skills, and score at least 80% on
the final exam.
Upon
successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in
Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and
AED.
Preregistration is required before February 10 at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC), 1100 2nd
Avenue South. The fee for AFC members is $200, and the fee for
nonmembers is $225. The registration fee includes a lifeguard training
manual and personal CPR mask, which will be distributed in class.
