Higher than normal tides expected along the SC Coast October 25-31

As the forecast applies to North Myrtle Beach, tides may increase 1.5 feet to 2 feet or more above normal.

When tides are this high, some streets and some yards in low-lying areas of the city (examples: Cherry Grove, White Point Swash near Windy Hill) may flood temporarily.

Additional beach erosion may occur, especially in areas where the high tide beach has already been compromised by Tropical Storm Ana, Hurricane Joaquin, and record rainfall.

The good news is that forecasters do not expect rainfall to accompany these higher than normal tides, nor do they expect high winds, both of which can exacerbate flooding and its impact.

Motorists and pedestrians should avoid traveling on flooded streets and sidewalks. If barricades are erected, motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to go past them.

Property owners who live in low-lying areas that traditionally experience temporary flooding during higher than normal tides should move valued outside belongings to a different location.

A similar higher than normal high tide scenario is also forecast to occur again in late November.

Annual North Myrtle Beach Citywide Cleanup Day Set For November 7, 9am-12pm, at the NMB Sanitation Transfer Station

North Myrtle Beach residents are encouraged to participate in the November 7, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., annual Citywide Home Cleanup Day, sponsored by the Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful Commission, North Myrtle Beach Sanitation Department, and City of North Myrtle Beach.

Gregg Barnhill, Operations Director and City Coordinator for Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful, stands next to some of the paints, chemicals, jelled gasoline and other hazardous household materials accepted during a previous Citywide Cleanup Day.

The Citywide Home Cleanup Day provides North Myrtle Beach residents with an opportunity to clean out their closets, attics, garages, and storage sheds. During the event, residents may discard unwanted items, including appliances, TVs, furniture, paint, pesticides, chemicals, oil, old tires and more. However, no construction debris or medical waste will be accepted.

Furniture, Appliances, Bulky Items: The City provides a special collection service for furniture, appliances and other bulky items. These items should be placed at curbside for pickup. This service is not regularly scheduled but is provided on an as-needed basis. Please call the Sanitation Division at (843) 280-5500 prior to placing such items at curbside to ensure prompt pickup.

Other Items: Residents must transport all other items to the North Myrtle Beach Sanitation Department Transfer Station located on 2nd Avenue South. (Once on 2nd Avenue South drive toward the Intracoastal Waterway past City Hall and the Aquatic & Fitness Center. The drop off site is on the right hand side of 2nd Avenue South.)

Usable Furniture & Appliances: Please consider donating unwanted usable furniture and appliances to the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries or local churches. Many of these organizations will pick up items to be donated.

The Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful Commission offers a community-based volunteer program to educate and empower the North Myrtle Beach community to personally improve the environment and enhance quality of life and community pride through beautification, litter prevention and recycling.

The Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful Commission is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.

To volunteer as a Cleanup Day helper or to acquire more information about Cleanup Day, please contact Gregg Barnhill at  (843) 280-5673 or dgbarnhill@nmb.us

Surveying, Dune Repairs, Dune Walkover Stabilization Activities In North Myrtle Beach

If you notice surveying occurring on the beach in North Myrtle Beach, Coastal Carolina University personnel are taking measurements to help determine sand loss from the recent storms. The resulting information will be submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the formal process the City must follow as it continues to seek emergency beach renourishment funds.

You may also see City personnel working on the beach with equipment in areas where dune walkovers were damaged by the storms, and sections of dunes were severely breached. Personnel will be moving sand up from the low tide beach to place under and around damaged dune walkovers, and they will also use low tide beach sand to fill in some severely breached sections of dunes.

The City is required to do the work as part of its formal agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to maintain the federal beach renourishment project within its jurisdiction. The Corps is aware that the work is being accomplished and, as part of the process, the City will document the work it is performing and provide the Corps with a report.
