The North Myrtle Beach Tree City Board has presented its Tree of the Month Award for August to the Woodmere subdivision for a crape myrtle (lagerstroemia indica) tree with multiple trunks located at the entrance to the subdivision (around 918 Edge Drive). The tree is about 40 feet tall and has a spread of about 35 feet. It has a smaller twin with a single trunk on the opposite side of the entrance. A Woodmere resident believes the trees were planted in 1989.

Crape myrtles are well-suited for North Myrtle Beach’s soil and climate. They are deciduous with leaves from late spring through fall and colorful flowers from mid-June through August. Depending on the variety of crape myrtle, flowers can be various shades of white, pink, red, and purple. The crape myrtle also has a unique shredding/peeling bark that reveals its lighter colored under-bark.
